This is another one of our Christmas food traditions – along with monkey bread on Christmas morning – my family LOVES Chex Mix!

This year, I made it to give to friends/neighbors as a small gift, along with cinnamon roasted almonds.

Now…don’t get me wrong. I know that,

a) Chex Mix can be purchased pre-made

and

b) the boxes of Chex now announce you can “enjoy Chex Mix in 15 minutes”! (with the use of your microwave)

but neither one is as delicious as this slow-roasted, homemade version. This stuff is delicious snacking food!

Chex Mix

(Family Recipe)

* We have two varieties, here – because portions of my family hate the Wheat Chex

Variety #1:

1 box Corn Chex

1 box Wheat Chex

1 box Rice Chex

1 Box Cheerios

1 Box (or half a bag) of pretzel sticks

1 small can (or half a glass jar) or Planter’s Dry Roasted Peanuts

OR

Variety #2

2 boxes Corn Chex

1 box Rice Chex

1 Box Cheerios

1 Box (or half a bag) of pretzel sticks

1 small can (or half a glass jar) or Planter’s Dry Roasted Peanuts

Whichever you decide to go with, mix them together in the largest oven roaster you own / or / two or three very large casserole dishes. This recipe makes a lot – and you need room to stir it when it’s in the oven!

Then…

Mix:

1/2 – 1 TBSP garlic salt (or powder)

1 TBSP onion salt (or powder)

1 TBSP celery salt

1 TBSP Accent (totally optional…I almost never use it b/c I don’t keep it on hand)

Melt:

1 pound of butter

– add 1 TBSP worchestershire sauce to the melted butter and stir to mix

Sprinkle some of the mixed salts on the cereal, drizzle some melted butter/worchestershire mix over the top, and stir

Repeat until all of the salt mixture and butter mixtures are on the cereal

Bake at 225 degrees F for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

Let cool completely, and then store in an airtight container or zip-top bag
