A first-person story about a lady-in-waiting for Lucrezia Borgia, who falls in love with Cesar Borgia, and ends up having a son with him and getting involved in all sorts of courtly drama.
Boy. Lots of potential for amazing historical fiction here. And yet…it completely fell short. Many of the reviewers called this book laborious…I wouldn’t go that far.
In fact – I really enjoyed the book – up until the last 100 pages or so. Maybe I just like a happy ending, but with all that Esther (the main character) goes through, a little happiness wouldn’t have been so hard, would it? The girl pines for a man who’s never loved her for 500 pages and gets nothing? Really?
The book is very detailed and thorough up until those last 100 or so pages. At that point it’s almost as if the author realized she’d prattled on for 450 pages and should probably wrap it up.
A fun story with a bad ending. The curse of a lot of fun stories!

I love that at this point in this series, the books are complex, with multiple story lines and lots of good character interaction. This one is great – I do think there’s something..lacking…from the character development of Manuel, but that might just be all there is to the guy! lol
Still loving this series. 🙂

Enjoyed this! A fun spin on werewolves, vampires, and a "neutralizing" third party called a preternatural (that can turn the latter back into humans with a touch) – all wrapped up in Victorian England.
Great little book – the series does go on, but I don’t know if I’ll read more. It’s great as a stand-alone.

At 10 pages in, and I thought this is a little bit Black Dagger knockoff. 🙂 The story premise – dragonkind who can morph into humans, and rely on electrical surges regulated by the meridian twice a year – is a very original premise. Definitely points for that! The book, however, is written in such a similar format to the Black Dagger Brotherhood books that originally I was turned off by how it felt like a copy. That does fade into the background as you continue to read, though – which is good. These books are fun, easy reads, but I guess I’m just in the minority on wanting a solid plot to surround my smutty literature. I like the Black Dagger books because there are side stories and other things going on besides constant sex. These have the potential to do the same, however, the author stops just short of putting ENOUGH plot in around the sex. Another 100 pages of plot and this would have been a very, very good read.
Regardless, at $3.99 a pop for kindle, I think they’re worth a quick, easy read if you’re headed on vacation or lounging around. Especially if you like the Black Dagger books.

Callahan’s storytelling ability seems to be growing stronger with this second book. Her first book – I thought – lacked some of the subtle details that allow the reader to be pulled into this alternate dragon-filled world. This book fills in some of those gaps – though I think at this point there are so many hinted at items that she could write 10 books to this series, easily! There’s so much back story yet to be discovered here. Much better writing, great storyline. My biggest complaint is the ending. A lot of buildup, and a whole action-packed, abrupt ending in 15 pages. Dislike. Stretch that puppy out and make us love the two main characters of this book!

Eeehhh…..after all the hype about these books, and the making of true blood into a tv show…I really expected more. It’s "okay" but certainly not one of the better ones I’ve read.

Fantastic novella to tie up some of the loose ends from the book regarding Phury. Well written as always, J.R.

Couldn’t find "The Paper Princess" on Goodreads – tried to import it and ended up with this goofy 2-for-1!
Update: Would not recommend this one. Fluffly plot, flat characters, and the whole book feels as though two people were playing Mad Libs and just decided to publish it. Dislike.
