Review:
Another well-written young adult novel about a dystopian society. This one takes place in the USA – Maine actually – but the premise is that "love" is a disease, and all citizens are "cured" of this disease shortly after their 18th birthday. In true dystopian form, the main character, Lena – fall in love (aka gets the "disease") just before her birthday and risks it all to be with the boy in question (Alex).
Regardless of perhaps a pretty standard dystopian plot, the character formation is done really well here, and Lauren is an engaging writer. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the second book in the series, which comes out the end of February 2012. I am disappointed that this second book, however, comes with audio/video extras, meaning the pricetag is a hefty $10.99.

I hit a lull in this series with the 3rd and 4th books – they just weren’t my favorite. But the 5th brought it all back around for me. Loved this one!

Review:
I like a historical fiction novel as much as the next gal, but WOW. Whole lot of history, very little plot-inducing fiction. I struggled with finishing the book – I didn’t feel the historical significance and the main character played well together at all. The love triangle that is the center of this story was also drawn out too long. The main character’s temperament was awful and often caused more trouble than it was worth. The plot premise follows Eileen O’Neill throughout her – rather harsh – life in Ireland. And it just…wasn’t for me. I can’t even put my finger on why

I had high hopes for this book but I really feel like the plot fell short. I love the inclusion of bizarre old photos and I think the premise is good but somehow all the characters just feel….flat. You really don’t get attached to anyone. That bugged me.
I will note that those with e-readers may want to read the paper version….the book contains black and white photography and hand written letters and both are hard to see on my kindle.
