I bought it because I know the author’s sister, and obviously she proudly told us all about it. 🙂
Honestly, though – I enjoyed it. I thought it was relatively well written (I could’ve used a little more character development and a little less stereotypical aspects to the characters, though). That being said, the storyline was fun and unique, and I enjoyed the premise. I also enjoyed the alternate England – that was a lot of fun, and I think there’s a lot of room to grow in that "world" – even without the characters that were identified in this book. I’d like to see more of that!

This book is based on a Robert Browning poem about "His Last Duchess" – a poem written, in part, about Lucrezia de Medici, who married the Duke Alfonso Este…and then disappeared from record 3 years later. This book assumes that treachery was involved and it was Alfonso’s doing.
I wanted to enjoy this book because I love historical fiction. But there was just something…lacking. I wish I could put my finger on it. The characters felt robust, but, something about the storyline left me wanting. Additionally, I felt like the "extra" characters stories in the book didn’t come together as tidily as I’d have liked. There’s a lot of glossing over of relationships, encounters, and other materials. There’s a serious lack of explanation about why Alfonso, the duke, is so bizarre. I don’t know – it had potential but didn’t live up to it.

Very, very much enjoyed this installment in the series! The last few books were lackluster for me, but this one was great. I guess technically it’s "Phury’s" story, but there are enough other plot lines going on now that the books are no longer single-character focused. And I really like that. Lots of different side stories coming to a head in the next few books. 🙂

SO thrilled that this series has taken an interesting and multi-story-lined turn! The last few books weren’t so good; but now there are enough side stories going on that this book was as wonderful as #6. Eagerly reading the rest of this series ASAP. 🙂
